The mother and daughter duo making a difference at Canterbury House care home
A mother鈥檚 guidance can last a lifetime, and for Karen (aged 61) and her daughter Phoebe (aged 25), this support even extends into their work. With a combined 8 years of experience working at Canterbury House care home in Faversham, their connection not only strengthens their relationship but enriches the lives of the residents they care for.
Karen, a Team Leader, and Phoebe, a Care Assistant, have worked at Canterbury House care home since it opened its doors in June 2021. Their paths at work are often intertwined, with days spent alongside one another, deepening their connection. Their shared approach to work is built on kindness and compassion to one another, as well as those they care for and their colleagues.
The journey to work is something Karen and Phoebe look forward to each day. Whether they鈥檙e driving to Canterbury House or enjoying the sunshine walking together, the journey is an opportunity to share experiences from past shifts together.听
One resident, Albert, became particularly memorable to both Karen and Phoebe. Throughout his care, they heard many wonderful stories about his life, and the fond memories he had with his family. When Albert passed away, it left a huge impact on the whole team, but especially Karen and Phoebe. Attending his funeral was a moment to reflect. 鈥淲e鈥檝e built a special bond with his family, who still message us to check-in. It鈥檚 these special relationships that make working at Canterbury House so meaningful,鈥 says Karen.
At work, Phoebe never refers to Karen as 鈥楳um鈥, which often surprises residents when they learn of their connection. 鈥淲e love to see the joy on residents鈥 faces when they find out we鈥檙e mother and daughter!鈥, Phoebe says.
For many young women, their mothers are sources of inspiration, and for Karen and Phoebe, working together has given them a chance to inspire each other. Karen says,
Working with my daughter has taught me a lot. 听I鈥檓 very proud to not only be Phoebe鈥檚 mother, but also to be her colleague.
For Phoebe, working with her Mum on Mother鈥檚 Day is always a special occasion.
Not only do I get to spend time with my mum on this special day, but we feel like a part of the day for many other residents whilst they spend time with their own families. We hope it marks a memorable moment for everyone.
