Practising proper waste disposal
We want our homes to be secure and welcoming places to live. We can achieve this by disposing of waste safely and responsibly.
Waste that is disposed of irresponsibly can be unsightly, unsafe and may even cause accidents.
Fires involving rubbish can quickly spread to nearby homes and buildings. To reduce this risk, it鈥檚 important that waste is disposed of responsibly. Here are some helpful steps you can take:
- Only put rubbish and recycling containers out on collection day
- Don鈥檛 leave bulky waste in communal spaces, like corridors and stairwells
- Never block fire escape routes with waste
- Avoid disposing of hazardous and flammable waste through regular disposal methods. Instead, seek local specialist disposal services. You can find further information on your local council鈥檚 website
- Recycle and reuse of bulky items through donation or resale programs.
- You may be able to arrange with your local authority to collect bulky waste
- If you miss a collection, contact your local council to report it
- Where you have a waste bin store, ensure it remains secured when not in use
For bulky waste items, trips to the local Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC), is the most practical way to effectively dispose. Depending on the size of an item, you may be required to rely on council collections.
You can check the waste services that your local council provides by going on your council鈥檚 website. You can find your local council鈥檚 website .
